Q&A With County Commissioner Trista Martinson

Trista Martinson

County Commissioner | Ramsey County

Trista MartinsonTell us about your background. What are the experiences, including education, that make up the person you currently are?

I am a military Veteran, housing advocate, mother of 5, Sexual assault survivor, and now a county commissioner.

What was your trigger moment and why this specific office?

I have a special needs child and have had to navigate county resources for him for 21 years and it’s impossible. It was a point in time that I knew if I couldn’t get access to care for him, my neighbors couldn’t either. It, along with extreme disappointment in my representation on the board, was my triggering point.

What made you feel qualified to run for office?

I’m not sure I feel “qualified” yet, but I know I have been highly effective in this role. Hard work, passion, and persistence are what it takes more than any qualifications.

Do you work full-time or part-time?

Full-time.

Most people don’t know what their elected official does on a daily basis. What’s a typical day looking like for you?

Every day is different, its constituent relations, representing our county on numerous other boards, reading & researching policy and learning best practices, setting budgets and agendas, learning with and from community, and lots and lots of zoom!

Additionally, they might not know what their elected official is responsible for. What is your role in comparison to other elected offices on your level?

I am Chair of the Housing Redevelopment Authority for our county and Vice-Chair of the budget committee as well as the legislative team. I serve on 27 other boards and commissions that impact the county as well as being actively involved in the National Association of Counties as vice chair of the Military and Veterans Services Committee.

What do you think people would be surprised to know someone in your position does?

I think the number of other boards and commissions we are appointed to would be a surprise or our role in elections. For instance, I certified the 2020 elections for our county! Pretty awesome as we elected our first Woman VP!

What are 3-5 skills needed to be successful in the elected office you served in/are currently serving in?

Passion, Persistence, Patience (though I struggle with it), Positivity, Personability.

What’s the best part about serving in elected office?

Making a difference! In 3 short years, I’ve brought more resources to my district and county than have been in the last 30 years! Connecting with community and moving toward breaking down barriers of systematic racism and oppression.

What has been the accomplishment you’re most proud of while in office?

Funding our Housing and Redevelopment authority with Capital money and implementing the first every levy for ongoing funding.

In terms of finances, how much money did you have to raise for your campaign?

$60K.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who’s thinking about running for the position you serve/have served in their community?

Run! and Run Hard and strong and lead with compassion, integrity, and grit!
