Civic Engagement is a Family Affair!

Election season is always a thrill (to us, at least), but it’s not just registered voters who have a lot to get pumped about! As far as we’re concerned, it’s never too early to get excited about involvement in democracy. That’s why we’re delighted to have partnered with Now Upon a Time on Princess and the Pea-tition! It’s a nonpartisan story for children ages 3+ about the importance of democracy and voting. Here are five ways you can use the book to build enthusiasm around civic engagement for the children in your life.

1. Coordinate with your local library

Book a space at your neighborhood library to hold an event for parents and kids to read the book and talk about the importance of participating in democracy.

2. Host a listening event

Get a group of parents and their children together at home, in a park, or in another community space to hold a listening event that includes a reading of Princess and the Pea-tition so you can meet other parents and engage them in voting!

3. Use your community network for a read-along

Can’t coordinate an event in one time slot? No worries! Either on social media or IRL, encourage folks in your network to read the book across the same time period and commit to thinking about how to get more civically engaged.

4. Set up a storytime

Organize a storytime where you read Princess and the Pea-tition to kids. After the reading, open up a Q+A for parents and kids to explore what civic engagement looks like together!

5. Go deeper into Civics 101

Using Princess and the Pea-tition as a starting point, introduce older kids to the fundamentals of civics with Civics 101–or use this opportunity to review the basics of the US government yourself!

As part of our partnership with Now Upon a Time, we’re thrilled to be able to offer 100 free copies of Princess and the Pea-tition. Reach out to us at [email protected] to request your copy!
